Higgins beats Gould to reach round two at Crucible

Four-time Crucible champion John Higgins resisted a spirited Martin Gould fightback to secure a place in the second round of the World Championship with a 10-6 win.
World number 18 Gould trailed 7-2 overnight but opened with a century and then closed the gap to 7-4.
Scotland’s Higgins, 41, scored a superb ton of his own to lead 8-5 before finally shaking off the Londoner.
World number six Higgins plays Northern Ireland’s Mark Allen in round two.
An all-China encounter in the afternoon session, world number four Ding Junhui resumes 7-2 up on qualifier Zhou Yuelong, while second seed Judd Trump begins his quest for a first Crucible title against Rory McLeod.
Liang Wenbo and Stuart Carrington play to a finish this evening, with world number 10 Ali Carter beginning his first-round match against the 2006 champion Graeme Dott.
